Delete your Gmail account

If you decide that you don't need your Gmail address anymore, you can remove it from your Google Account. Deleting your Gmail address won't delete your entire Google Account. What happens when you delete your Gmail address Your Gmail address can't be used by you or anyone else in the future. Your emails will be deleted. Your Google Account, including purchases made on Google Play and your search history, won't be deleted. Change your username

You can change the name that's linked to your email address, but you can't change your email address. Change your name You can change the name that shows up when you send emails. For example, you could change from "Sports Fan" at sportsfan@gmail.com to "Bob" at sportsfan@gmail.com.  On your computer, open  Gmail . You can't change your username from the Gmail app. In the top right, click Settings. Click  Settings . Click the  Accounts and Import  or  Accounts  tab. In the "Send mail as" section, click  edit info . Add the name you want to show when you send messages. At the bottom, click  Save Changes . Sign out of Gmail

Depending on what device you use Gmail on, you can either sign out of Gmail, remove your Google Account, or switch between different accounts. COMPUTER Sign out on your computer Open  Gmail . In the top right, click your photo. Click  Sign out . Sign out from another computer If you forgot to sign out of your email on another computer, you can remotely sign out of Gmail. Open  Gmail . In the bottom right corner, click  Details     Sign out all other web sessions . Tip:  If you’re using a public or shared computer, sign out of your Google Account before leaving the computer. Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses

If someone accidentally adds dots to your address when emailing you, you'll still get that email. For example, if your email is  johnsmith@gmail.com , you own all dotted versions of your address: john.smith@gmail.com jo.hn.sm.ith@gmail.com j.o.h.n.s.m.i.t.h@gmail.com Note:  If you use Gmail through work, school, or other organization (like yourdomain.com or yourschool.edu), dots do change your address. To change the dots in your username, contact your  admin . No one else gets your emails No one can take your username Your Gmail address is unique. If anyone tries to create a Gmail account with a dotted version of your username, they'll get an error saying the username is already taken. Change email notifications

You can turn on notifications to get alerts on your phone or computer when you get new emails. COMPUTER   Turn notifications on or off You can get email notifications on Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari when you're signed in to Gmail and have it open in your browser. Note:  You won't see any notifications if you turned off all notifications for your browser. On your computer, open  Gmail . In the top right, click Settings      Settings . Scroll down to the "Desktop notifications" section. Select  New mail notifications on ,  Important mail notifications on , or  Mail notifications off . At the bottom of the page, click  Save Changes . Note:  If you use  inbox categories  and turned on notifications for new mail, you'll only get notifications about messages in your Primary category. If you turned on notifications for important mail, you'll get notifications for everything marked as  important .

Add or remove inbox categories & tabs in Gmail

Sort your emails into different inbox tabs, like Social or Promotions. When you open Gmail, you won't have to see all emails at once. COMPUTER Add or remove category tabs On your computer, open  Gmail . In the top right, click Settings      Settings . Click the  Inbox  tab. In the "Inbox type" section, select  Default . Note: To hide all tabs, select another inbox type. In the "Categories" section, check the boxes of tabs you want to show. Note: You can't make new tabs; you can only show or hide existing ones. Scroll to the bottom, then click  Save Changes . Note: If you've  turned on notifications , you'll only get notifications about emails in your Primary category. Sign in to Gmail

To open Gmail, you can login from a computer, or add your account to the Gmail app on your phone or tablet. Once you're signed in, check your mail by opening your inbox. COMPUTER   Sign in On your computer, go to  gmail.com . Enter your Google Account email or phone number and password. If information is already filled in and you need to sign in to a different account, click  Use another account . If you see a page describing Gmail instead of the sign-in page, click  Sign in  in the top right corner of the page.
